WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS IN HR ?

Mental health and wellness in HR are becoming top priorities for employers. In fact, HR leaders named mental health and wellbeing as their third biggest peoblem, behind the labour shortage and retaining talent.

Clearly mental health and wellness is realated to the employee experience, and the new normal require HR leaders to provide support, empathy and guidance for helping those who need it.

WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH?

The US government defines mental health as the emotional, psychological and social well being of an individual. Obviously, one's mental health contributes to how he thinks,feels and acts, and it relates to resiliency and relationships with others.


WHAT IS WELLNESS ?

Wellness refers to the totality of health- both mental and physical- of an employee, according to the society of Human Resource Management.

When employers focus on wellness, they are aiming to provide employees with preventative solutions to avoid illness and long-term helath problems.

WHY EMPLOYEE WELLNESS IS IMPORTANT 

The well-being of employees is a key factor in determining your organization's long-term success and effectiveness. By creating a well-being program or plan,you can tackle the different aspects of wellness,enhancing the well-being of your team and their overall happiness, job satisfaction and engagement. 

It helps employees perform better,boosts employee morale, prevents lost time due to illness , stress or absenteeism, helps bring down turn over and more. In all, it benefits both employers and employees.

HOW TO INCREASE EMPLOYEE MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS 

  • Recognize good work.
  • Boost team relationships.
  • Offer flexible working and benefits.
  • Promote a more healthy lifestyle. 
  • Communicate effectively. 
  • Give your employees a voice.
  • Accept regular feedback.
  • Raise the profile of mental health.

RESULTS OF UNHEALTHY WORK ENVIRONMENT

A bad work environment affects employees by making them feel demoralized and disengaged. It can lead to excessive stress, fatigue, depression and anxiety and even feeling of burnout. Employees in a toxic work environment may feel demotivated , which will decrease their productivity.


WHAT IS EMPLOYEE BURNOUT?

Employee burnout is a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion that usually stems from prolonged stress or frustration. It is linked to high employee turnover, disengagement, depression and negative feelings towards work and the work place.

SEVEN STRATEGIES FOR CREATING HEALTHY WORK ENVIRONMENT

1. Give workers more control over how they do their work.

2. Allow employees more flexibility about when and where they work.

3.  Increase the stability of worker's schedule.

4. Provide employees with opportunities to identify and solve workplace problems.

5. Keep your organization adequately staffed, so workloads are reasonable.

6. Encourage managers in the organization to support employee's personal needs.

7. Take steps to foster a sense of social belonging among employees.




CONCLUSION

Promoting employee's wellness and wellbeing physically and mentally should be one of the priorities as an employer. It is beneficial not only to the employees but also to the organization. Focus should not be given only to their physical wellness and helath, but also to their mental and financial health.
